Nature and Discovery Delight the Senses at Seacoast Science Center and Odiorne Point State Park

Autumn transforms the New Hampshire seacoast into a vivid, full-sensory experience—salt air mingles with the scent of fallen leaves, trees ignite in brilliant color, and migrating birds call overhead. There’s no better place to experience the seasonal richness than by visiting Seacoast Science Center and Odiorne Point State Park. This dynamic coastal setting offers a unique mix of natural beauty and educational opportunities, making it a perfect destination for families, nature enthusiasts, and curious minds alike.

A Symphony of Sights, Sounds, and Smells

As you step into Odiorne Point State Park, you’re greeted by the symphony of rustling leaves and the gentle crash of ocean waves against the rocky shore. The Park’s diverse ecosystems, including woodlands, salt marshes, and a beautiful coastline, provide a rich tapestry of experiences. In the fall, the foliage bursts into vibrant hues of red, orange, and gold, creating a picturesque backdrop for a nature walk or hike.

The crisp autumn air carries the scent of salt from the nearby sea, mingling with the earthy aroma of fallen leaves. Birdsong fills the air as migratory birds make their seasonal journey, offering an immersive experience to those who pause to listen. Whether you’re exploring the park’s scenic trails or simply sitting by the shore, the natural beauty of Odiorne Point is sure to captivate your senses.

Educational Adventures at Seacoast Science Center

Located within the Park, the Seacoast Science Center serves as a hub for coastal education, conservation, and exploration. Visitors can enjoy a captivating look at the region’s marine life and ecosystems through interactive exhibits designed to engage individuals of all ages.

In the fall, daily visitor programs explore the Park’s coastal ecosystems; for example, the wrackline–the area where the ocean meets the shore. Participants observe seaweeds, shells, driftwood, and more to learn about rocky shore life and ocean health.

Throughout the year, the Center provides a variety of accessible, drop-in, daily visitor programs aimed at educating and inspiring people of all ages about the vibrant marine environment of the New Hampshire coast. These programs are included with admission and often feature outdoor adventures, meet-and-greets with our animals, feeding sessions, community science experiments, or conservation discussions. Participants have the chance to engage in brief sessions that showcase the intriguing coastal ecosystem and emphasize the importance of ocean preservation.

In the fall, there are still plenty of opportunities to get outside, allowing participants to dive into the rich history, ecology, and biodiversity of the New Hampshire Seacoast’s coastal environment. Guided walks, scavenger hunts, habitat explorations, and other activities are led by the Center’s knowledgeable naturalists. These brief sessions showcase the intriguing coastal ecosystem, its wildlife, and emphasize the importance of ocean preservation.

For families with young children, the Big Fish Little Fish program is a meaningful introduction to environmental learning and community-building. This engaging program is held on Thursdays from mid-September to mid-April, and encourages children to explore and learn about nature and the world around them through hands-on activities and storytelling. Guided by naturalists, the day features engaging activity stations based on the week’s theme—ranging from birds and baby animals to marine mammals, pirates, and bugs. These stations encourage children to develop fine and gross motor skills, engage in sensory exploration, and foster literacy, math, and creativity. It’s an experience that encourages curiosity and a sense of wonder for the center’s youngest visitors.

The Big Fish Little Fish program at Seacoast Science Center is a wonderful way for families to introduce their young children to environmental learning and community-building. A favorite theme is always turtles, where after enjoying a story and short lesson with SSC’s naturalists, participants get to meet the center’s resident eastern box turtle, Raspberry.

Just as importantly, Big Fish Little Fish nurtures a community of early learners, helping families build connections and giving children a space to think like scientists—asking questions, making observations, and following their curiosity. The program cultivates a love of learning while strengthening the foundation for inquiry-based discovery and critical thinking.

With a team of knowledgeable staff and volunteers on hand, Seacoast Science Center ensures an enriching experience for families, school groups, and curious explorers alike.
