Among its many initiatives, the Marine Mammal Rescue (MMR) team works to protect marine mammals and educate the public along the New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts coast. The team not only provides critical response and rescue services for marine mammals but also engages the community through fun and informative seasonal programs, such as their Seal Walks.

The Vital Role of the Marine Mammal Rescue Team

The MMR team is composed of dedicated professionals and volunteers who are passionate about marine conservation. Their primary mission is to respond to reports of live and dead stranded marine mammals (seals, whales, dolphins, and porpoises) along the New Hampshire coast, providing rescue and triage care to live seals when necessary. The team works tirelessly to ensure that all marine mammals in need receive a timely response, emphasizing conservation, humane treatment, and public safety.

With the increasing threats of pollution, climate change, and human interference, marine mammals are more vulnerable than ever. The MMR team plays a crucial role in mitigating these impacts by rescuing distressed animals, collecting data, and educating the public about the importance of protecting these species and viewing them respectfully from a safe distance. Their efforts ensure that marine mammals receive the care they need and contribute valuable information to ongoing research and conservation efforts.

The Seal Walk Program: Education and Adventure

This unique initiative invites community members and visitors to join experts on guided walks along the beautiful coastline. Participants learn about seal ecology, behavior, the challenges they face, and the work involved in the team’s marine mammal efforts.

What to Expect on a Seal Walk

The Seal Walk program is designed to be both informative and enjoyable. During these walks, participants have the opportunity to:

  • Learn from Experts: Knowledgeable guides share insights into the natural history and behavior of seals, as well as the threats they face in their marine environment. This provides participants with a deeper understanding of the importance of marine conservation.
  • Spot Seals in their Natural Habitat: While exploring the coastline, walkers may observe seals basking on the rocks or frolicking in the water. This firsthand experience allows participants to appreciate the beauty and grace of these marine mammals.
  • Engage in Conservation Efforts: The program emphasizes the importance of conservation and encourages participants to become stewards of the ocean. Through interactive discussions, participants learn how they can contribute to protecting marine life.
  • Support the MMR Team: Proceeds from the Seal Walk program help fund the MMR team’s efforts, ensuring that they can continue their vital work.

Building a Community of Ocean Advocates

By involving the community in these activities, SSC fosters a sense of responsibility and connection to the ocean. Participants leave with a renewed commitment to protecting marine life and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

Through the Seal Walk program, the MMR team is engaging the community, educating the public, and nurturing a new generation of ocean advocates. This community connect has a lasting impact on the health of our oceans and the future of marine life.

What Participants are Saying

"I was impressed with the breadth of knowledge by all the staff about not only seals but the entire ecosystem. All staff were very receptive to questions and made me feel very welcome."

"It pleasantly surprised me how much you were able to cater to kids. Having the shorter telescope set up. Having the option to drive closer. That helped myself and my young daughter (age 3). She won’t stop talking about the seals now!"

Spot the Seals with the Marine Mammal Rescue Team

SSC’s Marine Mammal Rescue team conducts Seal Walks at Salisbury Beach State Reservation from November through April. Plan to join the MMR team during the 2025-2026 season to observe and learn about local seal species, as well as the team’s work. You can see the full schedule on Seal Walk web page.
