Eversource Funding Supports Accessibility at Seacoast Science Center

Posted on July 25, 2023

Seacoast Science Center (SSC) strives to provide a welcoming, accessible, and enriching experience for community members and its visitors. As a nonprofit institution, the Center relies on support from individuals and corporations to not only meet its operating budget, but to develop new programs and initiatives.

Eversource (formerly Public Service of New Hampshire, then Northeast Utilities) has been a long-standing champion of Seacoast Science Center, supporting the nonprofit since it opened its doors over 30 years ago, in 1992.

Through the years, Eversource has underwritten SSC publications, sponsored programs, and provided funding for exhibits. Eversource is the title sponsor for Restoring Reefs, an exhibit that immerses visitors in the beauty of colorful tropical reef habitats and helps them understand how reefs, both near and far, are important living systems in need of protection.

This summer, Eversource provided funding for SSC to purchase four sit-upon kayaks to allow for greater accessibility for its Wildlife Kayak Tours program. “We’re proud to support organizations that make a positive difference in the lives of our customers and our communities like the Seacoast Science Center, whose educational resources and experiences for people of all ages further our shared commitment to sustainability and responsible environmental stewardship,” said Eversource New Hampshire President of Electric Operations Doug Foley. “Our employees are excited to build on this fantastic, long standing partnership through our support of their accessible kayak program to help make these unique ecological educational experiences more inclusive for all.”

Eversource has also underwritten a new program slated to launch in September: Nature @ Nite. This early-evening program will be offered one Friday per month, free of charge. Each evening will be based on a different theme with SSC naturalists and guest partners hosting marine-related S.T.E.A.M. learning stations and a facilitated group program.

“Eversource’s support of our Wildlife Kayak Tours and our new after-hours program enables us to provide our community greater access to nature-based learning,” notes SSC’s CEO Jim Chase. “We are grateful for their partnership and commitment to our mission. We look forward to continuing our work together as we educate and inspire conservation along New Hampshire’s coastline and beyond.”

Eversource encourages senior staff members to serve on nonprofit boards and SSC has been fortunate to consistently have their representatives on its leadership team. Eversource also engages its staff in group community service days and annually assists Seacoast Science Center with maintenance projects.

With the continued support of community partners like Eversource, Seacoast Science Center remains a flagship institution, expert resource for environmental education, and advocate for conservation of our Blue Planet.
