Will Hancock began volunteering at Seacoast Science Center as a means to get hands-on work experience that would better position him to secure a job after he graduates from college. Currently a junior at University of New England majoring in Aquaculture and Aquarium Science, Will’s dream is to work at a large aquarium doing manatee rehabilitation. Moreover, his true interest lies in sea turtle and manatee conservation and education.
“I started volunteering in visitor services as a naturalist at the touch tanks,” shared Will. “Interacting with the public was not my forte, but it feels more natural when speaking to people who are like-minded or have an interest in learning about marine animals and the ocean. I am an introvert at heart, so my time at SSC has really helped get me out of my comfort zone.”
This past winter, Will started volunteering in the aquaria department as well, assisting with feedings, water quality testing, and cleanings. While he is learning about life support systems in school, he is gaining experience with much larger, integrated systems at SSC. Will’s mentor, SSC Aquarist I Sam Rutka, shares his many years of technical experience and deep knowledge of animal husbandry, enriching his learning experience far beyond the classroom.
Will is a certified SCUBA diver and plans to become a SCUBA instructor in the future. He is passionate about helping to connect people to the marine environment and learning more about marine animals. “There is so much to discover here in the Gulf of Maine,” states Will, “I believe the first step to understanding complex ecosystems like our world ocean is to first understand your own neighborhood.”
“Seacoast Science Center has had a great impact on my life. I might not have all the answers, but SSC has taught me that that is okay. Life is a learning journey and I look forward to each day at SSC, learning and experiencing new things. I am happy to be at a place where I can do my part to inspire people to appreciate and conserve the marine world and I am certain my time here will serve me well in the future.”
Will anticipates moving to Florida after he earns his degree to pursue his dream to work with manatees. We are grateful to be part of Will’s journey and are fortunate to have his help at the touch tanks and behind the scenes. We wish you all the best and are excited to hear about the adventures that await you, Will.
