SSC provides educational resources to over 26K in first two weeks of temporary closure

Seacoast Science Center is reaching out to engage families through their new online Your Learning Connection resource, virtually guiding them through nature exploration adventures, providing complimentary lessons and activities, and supporting STEM learning at home.

During this unprecedented global health crisis, Seacoast Science Center has been hard at work to find new ways to continue to engage the community in science- and nature-based learning. Within the first two weeks of launching its new digital Your Learning Connection resource, SSC has reached over 26,000 families across New Hampshire and beyond.

“We knew that teachers were scrambling to move their classes online and parents were suddenly tasked with being tutors,” explains SSC President Jim Chase. “We felt we had a duty to support them in any way we could and that our signature brand of hands-on education could easily complement their instruction. Our education team made a remarkable pivot. One day they were preparing to host thousands of kids in field trip programs, the next they were creating original content for web-based education.”

Your Learning Connection features educational videos designed to inspire families to explore nature near home, aquaria animal spotlights, and accompanying lesson plans and activities that support STEM learning.

Being unable to host in-person programs, school field trips and events, however, is hitting the non-profit hard and support from the community is more critical than ever. To help make giving easy, Seacoast Science Center established a GoFundMe Covid-19 Emergency Fund campaign. The fundraising goal of $125,000 will cover one month of lost revenue.

In support of the new online educational asset, a Seacoast Science Center board member stepped forward to match up to $10,000 in donations through April 20. That means every dollar donated during this time will be doubled.

“We are seeing what a small, interconnected world we live in, how dependent we are on one another and how important health is,” said the donor. “Our ocean connects us all and its health is very much tied to human health. I hope my gift inspires others to support the Seacoast Science Center and recognize how invaluable this organization is.”

All gifts to Seacoast Science Center will help ensure that they can continue to advance their transformative science education for families and school children, build a conservation-minded community, and welcome you back to its unparalleled location in beautiful Odiorne Point State Park.
