Our Programs

Indoor Programs

Marine Mammal Protection

Indoor Program
Length: 1 hour
Price: $175

Seals haul out onto the beach to rest and soak up the sun. Yet, what happens when a seal is in distress and in need of rescue? The Seacoast Science Center Marine Mammal Rescue (MMR) team responds to all marine mammals that haul out or strand on the shores of New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts. During this program, participants will learn about seal species commonly found in the Gulf of Maine, find out how MMR responds to seals on the beach, and learn about current threats to local populations. You will also learn how MMR’s work helps to identify trends in ocean health, as well as how to better protect it.

North American Lobster

Indoor Program
Length: 1 hour
Price: $175

Lobsters play an important role in the ecosystem as well as the economy of the Gulf of Maine region. The local lobster fisheries are closely regulated, and therefore on track to be sustainable for many years to come. During this program, participants will get up close and personal with this iconic New England crustacean and learn about the lobster’s unique adaptations that make it such a resilient species.

The Changing Ocean

Indoor Program
Length: 1 hour
Price: $195

The ocean is constantly changing, both seasonally and globally. In this program, participants will learn about what is causing these changes, how scientists observe these shifts, and will use actual data sets to predict trends. You will learn how increased atmospheric CO₂ emissions are altering the seawater carbonate system and decreasing the pH of the ocean’s surface waters. Participants will gain an understanding of why the Gulf of Maine is one of the most productive ecosystems in the world and how it is constantly changing due to temperature, salinity, and human impacts. In addition, participants will explore the links between changing ocean chemistry and human activity, and consider how the health of the ocean affects human health.

Outdoor Programs

History Walk

Outdoor Program
Length: 1 hour
Price: $175

Talk a walk around Odiorne Point State Park and learn about the rich social history of the area while immersing yourself in nature’s wonders. Walk the trails, explore the Park, and add your footprints to those of the Native Americans, European settlers, fisherman, local families, and the military that came before us. Get an up close look at historic landmarks amongst diverse habitats and leave with a new perspective of the New Hampshire seacoast.

Rocky Shore Citizen Science

Outdoor Program
Length: 1 or 2 hours
Price: 1 hour: $175; 2 hour: $215

This introduction to the diverse and dynamic rocky shore habitat aims to excite and inspire citizens to get involved in science and conservation in their own backyards. The program begins with a lesson on the unique ecology of the rocky shore intertidal zones and an update on local studies that are currently in progress. After a tutorial of some scientific tools commonly used along the coast, participants head out into the tide pools to observe, identify, and classify organisms through guided exploration. Come learn about methods of data collection in the field and add to a valuable community data set!
