About Safari Camp
Seaside Safari Camp is a fun-filled learning adventure that takes advantage of the natural classroom just outside our doors in historic, 135-acre Odiorne Point State Park. The Center’s hands-on exhibits, scientific instruments, and teaching technology of the Gregg Interactive Learning Studio help to reinforce what campers learn outdoors. Lessons, activities, art projects, games, and stories combine for a full day of learning, excitement and fun!
Children are grouped by grade they are currently in:
Grade 1: Sea Stars
Grades 2-3: Green Crabs
Grades 4-5: Seafarers
Session 1: June 22-26
Blue Stewards (by day or week)
What can you do to make our one World Ocean healthier for all? Come examine how our actions, including the seafood we choose to eat, effect the health of our Blue Planet. Learn more about the 5 R’s (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle & Rot) through fun projects and examine how the world’s fisheries are changing.
Session 2: June 29-July 3
Habitats Near and Far (by day or week)
This week, we will immerse ourselves in the Center’s two exciting new exhibits, Restoring Reefs! and NH Beaches, to discover what makes these habitats worth protecting. We’ll also explore Odiorne’s tide pools, salt marsh and forest to discover why protecting these ecosystems from pollution, invasive species and the detrimental effects of climate change is so important.
Session 3: July 6-10
Super Science Experiments!
Join us as we learn how scientists conduct experiments and what tools they use to answer their questions. How do the scientists’ discoveries make the world a better place? We’ll get hands-on and conduct some of our own experiments, using cool scientific tools to investigate the ocean and other habitats just outside our doors.
Session 4: July 13-17
Art in Nature
The natural world is filled with wonderful patterns, shapes, colors and designs. We’ll explore and uncover some of nature’s artwork and create some amazing art ourselves. Guest artists will join us to lead special craft projects. Each day we’ll take home a masterpiece, inspired by nature!
Session 5: July 20-24
Marine Mammal Mania
From the smallest marine mammal to the largest, we’ll learn about the adaptations air-breathing mammals, including whales, dolphins and seals, use to survive and thrive in the sea. Our Marine Mammal Rescue team members will tell us about the work they do to protect marine mammals and what you should do if you spot a seal on the beach.
Session 6: July 27-31
Terrific Tide Pooling!
Odiorne’s shore has dozens of tide pools waiting to be explored. We’ll learn about the amazing adaptations tide pool creatures and algae use to survive in an ever-changing habitat. Design your own tide-pool creature, complete with its own special adaptations!
Session 7: August 3-7
Marine Science & Ocean Exploration
Do you want to be Marine Scientist? Come learn about different ways people study and explore the ocean and all things marine. We’ll hear from Marine Scientists and others who have made it their life’s work to investigate the mysteries of the sea, from the ocean floor to the rolling waves above.
Session 8: August 10-14
Sharks and Ocean Predators
Sharks are truly amazing ocean predators, with a host of cool adaptions for detecting and catching their prey. We’ll examine these adaptations in depth, and learn about shark conservation worldwide. How are the world’s shark populations holding up? Come find out, and learn about other amazing ocean predators, such as the giant squid, as well!
Session 9: August 17-21
Pirates, Sailors, and Seacoast Lore
Ahoy, mateys! Get your swagger on and join us as we learn about famous pirates and sailors who have plied the seven seas. Learn about our seacoast history, design your own lighthouse, and imagine yourself living here 200 years ago as we walk along the coastline.
Session 10: August 24-28
Tide Pooling Palooza!
To the tide pools we go, searching for sea stars, urchins, crabs and more! Did you know that barnacles float around in the sea before finding a rock to call home? We’ll discover how life begins for these creatures between the tides and learn how they develop as they grow.
