Azores: Jewels of Portugal

Join SSC President Jim Chase on an eco-adventure to the Azores, an archipelago composed of nine volcanic islands in the Macaronesia region of the North Atlantic Ocean. Stay in eco-friendly lava stone houses of Aldeia da Fonte, Pico Island. Traverse the dirt paths of the Sete Cidades caldera and gaze upon the twin lakes. Swim in natural volcanic pools, and by zodiak, venture out into the blue Atlantic, keeping your eyes open for up to 25 species of whales.

Schedule At-A-Glance

Day 1: Overnight Flight from Boston to Portugal

Day 2: São Miguel. Your adventure begins on São Miguel, the largest of the nine volcanic islands. In the afternoon, enjoy a private whale watching tour, featuring a presentation on conservation.

Day 3: Ponta Delgada. Get to know Ponta Delgada, the capital city of São Miguel and traverse the dirt paths to the Sete Cidades caldera’s highest point on an off-road adventure.

Day 4-5: São Miguel. Learn about traditional willow basket making, enjoy the thermal waters at the Terra Nostra pool or embark on a guided visit to the Terra Nostra Botanical Garden. Enjoy lunch cooked by Earth’s volcanic heat and visit a tea plantation. Taste Azorean gin and a home-hosted dinner at a local village.

Day 6: São Miguel, Madalena, Pico. Fly to Pico, one of the most unique Azorean islands, and visit the Pico Wine Museum. Stay in a rustic lava stone house and enjoy dinner, cliffside.

Day 7: Pico. Walk at Lagoa do Capitao and look out over Sao Jorge Island, and visit a whaling museum.

Day 8: Pico, Angra do Heroismo, Terceira. Fly to to Terceira and say hello to the colorful capital of Angra do Heroismo (UNESCO) with a local guide.

Day 9-10: Friday-Saturday, October 11-12, Terceira. Swim in natural volcanic pools of Biscoitos, visit the “Cavern of Coal,” and explore this beautiful location and its delicacies at your own pace. 

Day 11-12: Terceira to Lisbon. Travel to Lisbon, city of the seven hills, and the starting point of many of its 15th century explorations, and enjoy a special farewell dinner.

Day 13: Fly home

Sustainability is a key value of all Seacoast Science Center programming including our EcoAdventures. Please know that a portion of your travel fee is applied to purchase carbon offsets from Sustainable Travel International to mitigate the environmental impact of this tour.
