Treks February Camp

About Treks

Whether your little trekker is ready for adventure or is a bit shy, our Treks program eases kids 4-5 years old into our nature-focused camp setting. Children gain confidence through play-based activities and guided exploration that follows their curiosity. Campers develop a new understanding and appreciation of the natural world around them by exploring Odiorne Point State Park, and all the Center has to offer.

Monday, February 20 and 27 Life in a Coral Reef

Come discover the wonders of coral reefs and the creatures that call this colorful ecosystem home. We’ll take a close look at the corals we are growing here at SSC and feed one of our reef inhabitants, the moray eel. We’ll discuss the threats to reef health and learn what we can do to protect this fragile ecosystem. Outside we’ll build snow sculptures of coral reef animals.

Tuesday, February 21 and 28 Walk in the Winter Woods

Take a hike with us as we investigate the winter woods of Odiorne Point State Park. We’ll learn how to identify trees by their bark, look for signs of wildlife, and make winter forts to hunker down in as we peer out over the frozen landscape

Wednesday, February 22 and March 1 Winter Storms and Shipwrecks

Winter can be a rough time to be out on the ocean in any kind of vessel. We’ll learn how sailors, scientists, and fishermen keep their ships upright in stormy weather. As we take a walk along the shoreline, we’ll hear stories of historic shipwrecks and the challenging work of life-saving stations and learn about the iconic lighthouses that have saved many a wayward sailor.

Thursday, February 23 and March 2Ocean Predators

From the Great White shark to the Giant squid, the ocean is teeming with predators looking for a meal. Come learn cool facts about these hungry creatures and design an imaginary ocean predator of your own. We’ll explore our live exhibits to see what predators lurk in tanks at SSC.

Friday, February 24 and March 3 Our Changing Planet

The earth is warming and the effects are far-reaching, causing change in the world’s oceans and for its inhabitants, our shorelines via sea level rise, and the severity and frequency of natural disasters, such as hurricanes and wildfires. We’ll learn cool facts about the ocean and why it is so important to keep our ocean healthy and clean. We’ll make colorful ocean creature crafts to take home with us.
