SSC Annual Fund to Help Support Schools in Need
Published on: 01/15/2010This year, we expect the need for schools requiring financial assistance to increase. That is why we will allocate 5% of all new and increased 2009-2010 Annual Appeal gifts to our School Fund.
This is the time of year that most American non-profits turn to their members and communities for additional financial support. At the Seacoast Science Center, annual fund contributions help us achieve our educational mission, stay afloat and keep our fish fed. This year, however, we are taking our annual fundraising in a new direction: 5% of new and increased donations will be allocated to our School Fund.
Last year, we conducted school programs for 19,000 students; 45% of those schools needed financial assistance from our School Fund. We expect the need and demand for financial aid will increase next year, so we are asking our members and constituents to help us help our schools. Our programs are not just for New Hampshire students; our distance education programs reach students throughout New England and across the country. That means that we could reach students in your home town, where ever you live.
Recent reports published by the National Academy of Science and National Wildlife Foundation stress the crucial role played by environmental and informal science education in students' performance at school, and even in their health. Both reports acknowledge that the need for deeper science content in the classroom, and the need for students to learn outdoors cannot be met by schools alone. They need help: exactly the kind of learning experiences that the Center provides every day.
According to the Academy's report "'...informal education is...integral...to ensure U.S. economic competitiveness, particularly the [nation's] future ability '...to produce future scientists, engineers, mathematicians and technologists." The reports validate the Center's work so clearly, that they inspired the theme for our 2009-2010 Annual Fund "we can't do it alone." Just as schools cannot teach enough science without our help, we cannot continue our programs without yours.
If you are a member of the Center, your annual fund letter will arrive in your mailbox soon. If you are not a member, you can still help us answer the National Academy's call that institutions like the Center "...can and should play an important role in science education, now more than ever." You can give securely and easily on line by clicking on the link below. Every gift helps.
