Funds Raised to Keep Seal Sculpture at SSC

The release of Belmont, the first seal rescued for rehabilitation by the Seacoast Science Center's Marine Mammal Rescue Team, has inspired local artist Marcia Gibbons to challenge the community to donate funds to keep Thomas Berger's Harbor Seal sculpture at the Center to commemorate the event.

Belmont the Seal Released into Wild

Belmont, a premature harbor seal pup rescued off a Hamtpon beach by the Seacoast Science Center's Marine Mammal Rescue Team on April 30, was released on a Cape Cod beach Tuesday evening, September 2nd. After four months of rehabilitation at the National Marine Life Center in Buzzards Bay, MA, Belmont was the first seal rescued by MMRT to be released back into the wild.

Caption: Volunteer blue lobster, Abbie Croot, and red lobster, Emily Croot, congratulate Nathan Huppe (#376) of Dover, NH, the overall winner with a time of 17:08 at Seacoast Science Center's Rescue Run: Race for Marine Mammals 5k trial race sponsored by Kennebunk Savings, held April 26. Overall top female, Leslie Dillon of Kittery, ME finished with a time of 19:06. Rebecca O'Brien (#66) and Chris Ritchie (#347) were second finishers. The race brought runners on a scenic route of varied terrain through Odiorne Point State Park. All proceeds from the event support the Center's marine mammal rescue and ocean education efforts.
